Lie Board & Impact Tape

Lie Board

Iron Fitting Methodology

A lie board is a fitting tool utilized in both FittingWorks Iron and Wedge fitting processes. A lie board can accurately determine the best lie angle for a player’s set of irons or wedges. In addition, the lie board will be used to help determine what swing technique a player uses with their wedges.

In most cases, players will hit two or three shots off of a lie board with impact tape applied to the sole of various test clubs. Impact marks and ball flight are analyzed to make recommendations.

Impact Tape

Impact tape is a fitting tool used during Driver, Iron and Wedge fittings. Impact tape is a thin adhesive paper stuck to the club face that shows impact much like carbon paper. Impact tape provides instant feedback regarding a player’s impact position. The information collected provides the Fitting Professional valuable feedback to help make informed decisions about a player’s ball flight, swing dynamics and impact position.

Impact location is affected by club length, posture, and club head path. Fitters will analyze your impact marks to select the right club specifications as well as swing variables to more frequently contact the middle of the clubface. Impact tape has a slight affect on ball launch numbers. In dry conditions impact tape used with a driver will increase spin approximately 300 rpm’s and lower launch angle by ½°. We do not recommend using driver impact tape in wet conditions as it vastly reduces spin rates.

Lie Tape is used during the Iron and Wedge fitting process and is placed on the sole of the golf club to determine the correct lie angle.

Lie tape is also used in Wedge fitting to determine the player’s wedge swing technique. Lie tape marks help categorize golfers as sweeper/sliders or driver/diggers, which will determine the proper bounce angle for their wedges.
